OUR HISTORY
Reverend Fred Sapp was the founding pastor of the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity (LCHT) which first assembled in 1977 and was formally organized on Reformation Day (October 31st), 1982. After many years of holding services at the Royal Kona Resort and the University of the Nations, our current sanctuary was dedicated in April 15, 1990. Initially part of the American Lutheran Church, LCHT joined with the denomination in the merger that birthed the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) in 1988. Reverend Sapp continued serving until his retirement in 2004.
Over the next 13 years, LCHT was served by a number of ministers that were faithful stewards of the Lutheran Tradition.
In late 2017, the Holy Spirit birthed an amazing new work. LCHT reached out to a local non-denominational church - Kona Bible Church - and agreed to share the property and facility that KBC didn’t have, while KBC agreed to share their pastor and staff that LCHT didn’t have. The result is 2 Churches . . . 1 Gospel!
Our partnership is a wonderful testimony that though each church may have its unique convictions, preferences, and styles, we can still honor God and one another as we proclaim the Good News. As we move into 2023 and beyond, we are excited to see God continue to work in and through our churches. Whether you long for the security of connecting to the history of the church through the Lutheran Tradition or you want to explore new ways of connecting with your faith, LCHT and KBC welcome you to connect with us.
